November 19, 2008: Government/Non-Profit Initiative Summit

In Vancouver, British Columbia, 120 individuals representing a diversity of leaders from British Columbia’s (BC) Non Profit sector (NPS) and Provincial Government gathered together at the Government/Non Profit Initiative (GNPI) Summit. Participants explored ways in which these two sectors can build on their complementary strengths to achieve better outcomes for individuals and communities. The purpose of the day was to:
  • Develop a prioritized Action Plan for implementation, and discuss who needs to be involved, what will be delivered, and when; and
  • Discuss the leadership and resources necessary to move the Action Plan forward.

The Summit was a day for progressing from information gathering and discussion to action and commitment. The intention was not to reiterate past work but to advance the ideas outlined in the GNPI’s Discussion Paper Better Outcomes, Stronger Communities and in the Better Outcomes, Stronger Communities Consultation Report, with the goal of creating an Action Plan and securing commitment from both sectors to support success.

October & November 2008 – Consultations through Regional Focus Groups and Online Survey

During October and early November 2008, the GNPI undertook community consultation to solicit input from a variety of Government and Non Profit Sector (NPS) departments and organizations on the Initiative’s recommended strategies and goals. The consultation provided opportunity for stakeholders to identify areas of opportunity and/or concern, additional priorities and obtain input for the GNPI’s strategic implementation.

Approximately 670 individuals participated, either through an online survey or regionally-based focus groups, to articulate their views. Sponsored by the GNPI and implemented by the Centre for Non-Profit Management (CNPM), participants represented the breadth and depth of the NPS (the health and social services fields in particular).

The Roundtable brought together 84 attendees including senior officials from government, non-profits, funding agencies, funding foundations and non-profit sector support centres. The discussions focused on enhancing communication and building a stronger relationship between the provincial public service and the non profit sector. The goal was to initiate the conversations that will build understanding of the challenges on both sides and, ultimately, lead to improved capacity for service delivery. The main message participants conveyed is that there is a will on all parts to strengthen the relationship and a commitment to seeking ways to do just that.
